Owl Nesting Box and Flexible Frame
The owl nesting box was built to house the local Northern Saw-Whet Owl. The box provides sheltered ventilation, has a hinged lid and removable floor for ease of cleaning to prolong its life and improve cleanliness, and has a weatherizing waterproof coating. The frame is attached to a tree using flexible tabs that will bend as the tree grows, allowing the frame to be mounted on the same tree year after year or moved between different-sized trees.
Materials: steel tubing, steel sheet, pine wood, brass hardware
Processes: SolidWorks CAD, oxygen-acetylene welding, sheet metal forming, woodworking, rust patina finishing, sanding, staining
Testing: the box was tested with a Northern Saw-Whet Owl; the frame was tested to withstand the weight of the box while attached to a tree
